Oxted HC U14 Boys crowned England Hockey SupreLeague Champions
Oxted Hockey Club’s under 14 Boys side, sponsored by Caterham’s Hockey Academy, were crowned champions of the U14 England Hockey SupraLeague Tier 1 Championships at the weekend.
Bringing together the best club sides in the country at Nottingham Hockey Centre, Oxted had qualified for the finals as South East SupraLeague Champions, which was no mean feat in itself topping a league against hockey powerhouses such as Surbiton, Wimbledon, Guildford and Canterbury.
At the finals, Oxted were drawn in the tougher of the two groups with Cambridge City, Taunton and Belper.
A 3-1 win over Cambridge in the first game gave Oxted the perfect start. This was followed up with two 1-1 draws with Taunton and Belper. The games were only 30 minutes (15 minutes each way) so taking chances and defending well were important factors throughout. These results meant Oxted qualified for the Final against a very good Wooton side.
A dominant display from start to finish saw Oxted win 2-1 (Wooton only scored with the last touch of the game) and thus become National Champions. This is a huge achievement for a club of Oxted’ size and is a wonderful testament to the talent within this team, with nine of the players from Caterham School – Rory W, Arthur P, Orin D, Yannick P, Jamie W, Hector H, Sam D, Tijmen P and Edwin K.
The future is very bright for these boys and hockey at Caterham School. The boys have been a part of Caterham’s Hockey Academy for the past three years.
