First LEGO League Robotics

On the Thursday before half term, six Caterham pupils from the First and Second year competed in the regional round of the First LEGO League robotics competition. The team had been preparing for the day since September, building and programming their robot to take on a variety of tasks. This year’s theme was “Submerged” with the challenge map and the tasks reflecting the bottom of the ocean. Missions included launching a submersible and fixing coral reefs. On the day the team had three attempts at the Robot game and improved their performance each time, working on their programming and strategy between each attempt. They also had to give two presentations to a panel of judges. Firstly, they had to present their innovation project that they had prepared on the engineering of a submersible to go as deep as possible in the ocean. After that they had to talk through their robot design and evolution. The judges then asked them questions on each aspect. Although the team did not progress to the next round, they were very close to the top score on the robot game and performed well overall. Special thanks to Freddie C from the Upper Sixth who has mentored the team this year and joined them on the day to offer support.
