Enriching trip to Vienna for Sixth Form Psychologists & Theologists

24 Sixth Form Psychology and Philosophy & Theology pupils explored Vienna’s rich intellectual heritage and cultural history over the recent half term break. A packed itinerary took the group through the lives and work of key figures such as Viktor Frankl, Sigmund Freud, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, providing pupils with a direct connection to their A Level topics of study.

The trip began with a guided tour through Vienna’s Jewish Quarter, where we explored Judenplatz and visited the Holocaust Memorial and Jewish Museum and pupils made meaningful cross-curricular links.

The Viktor Frankl and Sigmund Freud Museums gave pupils a look at two giants of psychological thought, in particular standing in Freud’s bedroom where he recorded hundreds of dreams that inspired his most significant work, The Interpretation of Dreams, was a profound experience for pupils (and staff!). After enjoying lunch at Cafe Central, pupils visited Narrenturm Tower, continental Europe’s first psychiatric clinic. The group were captivated by the museum’s unique exhibits, and the Narrenturm’s history spurred discussions about mental health’s evolving treatment.

Sunday brought a change of scenery with visits to the stunning Belvedere and Schönbrunn Palaces. Our pupils enjoyed the art collection featuring Gustav Klimt’s masterpieces, as well as a tour through the Habsburg family’s grand rooms and picturesque gardens. The day concluded with a fun and lively evening at Prater Amusement Park.

On the final day, we visited Hundertwasser House, an eclectic district designed by the post-war avant-garde artist, followed by Wittgenstein House, a modernist building designed by the philosopher for his sister.

This Vienna trip gave everyone a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the city’s extraordinary intellectual history, and we are incredibly proud of pupils’ engagement, curiosity and reflections throughout the trip.
