Christmas Science Lecture: Aerodynamics & Formula 1
The Moncrieff-Jones Society (MJS) was delighted to welcome Ben Brown (OC 2020) back to Caterham for our Christmas Lecture on Tuesday 3 December.
During his days as a Sixth Form pupil, Ben was well known for his interest in engineering, especially aerodynamics (and experiments involving wind tunnels). He presented The Mechanics of Flight to MJS in 2019, shortly before being appointed as Vice-President of the Society and Head of School, and he has been specialising in aerodynamics and rocketry at the University of Bristol for the last few years, where he is now studying for a PhD.
His Christmas lecture was entitled The Beauty of Fluid Mechanics. With sections of his speech demarcated by zoom-in animations on his PowerPoint slides, he discussed how insects and birds are able to fly (with a focus on the different types of wings that these animals have), how winged aircraft are able to generate and sustain lift, and how Formula 1 cars are superb examples of the forefront of aerodynamic artistry.
He responded insightfully to a range of questions from the audience after his speech, and offered some advice to some aspiring engineers.
Many thanks to Ben for venturing all the way back to Caterham to support our Society. Tuesday evening was an excellent illustration of how MJS is the place to be for all aspiring scientists embarking on their first steps into the world of research and presentation.
