Lunar New Year Showcase Leads Celebrations

Lunar New Year Showcase Leads Celebrations

On Wednesday 29 January we marked Lunar New Year with a ‘showcase’ at the Senior school. This was an opportunity to bring together pupils and staff in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year and a chance for them to come together to enjoy this celebration. It was also used as an opportunity to teach other pupils in the community about the traditions of the Lunar New Year celebrations. We had traditional decorations and lanterns, photos of families celebrating with food and red packets, traditional Chinese craft activities and the celebratory clothes that they wear.

Pupils from across the school demonstrated their calligraphy skills to make good luck signs and banners, to wish for prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead. We also had a demonstration of how to make Chinese dumplings and pupils enjoyed being able to have a go at this themselves. It was a pleasure to have some of our Prep pupils also visit and as a whole school community we all enjoyed Chinese food including Chicken Lo Mein, Sweet & Sour Pork and Fortune Cookies for our school lunch. This was a powerful way to recognise and celebrate this important cultural festival and was well received by pupils and staff alike.  Thanks from Mrs Seal and Ms Dong who helped to make this a success.
