Art Competition Wise Work from Art Scholars

Earlier this term the art scholars participated in a highly competitive international art competition in association with the Festival of Owls which is celebrated annually in Houston, Minnesota. This year there were 2,948 entries from 33 countries around the world.

The standard of work was extremely high and I am very pleased to report that 4 of our students received special mentions and were featured in the festival publicity. Please do congratulate Millie C in 1st year, Chloe K in 2nd year and Alexis C and Yara V in the Third Year.

The International Festival of Owls originally started as a “hatch-day” party for Alice the Great Horned Owl in 2003.  Alice is a permanently injured, human-imprinted owl who started her working career at the Houston Nature Centre.  Since she was the only live animal at the centre, she quickly became the focus of attention. She began working at the International Owl Centre in 2015 and is now retired. The “hatch-day” party idea served several purposes:

  • Taught people about owls
  • Provided a fun, family-friendly activity at the end of winter
  • Raised money for the Houston Nature Center/International Owl Center
