Foundation Members
Caterham School was founded in 1811 by a group of individuals and benefactors who shared the view that the sons of Congregational Ministers, who were excluded from mainstream school education at that time, should be educated. Our founders, led by the Reverend John Townsend and William Wilberforce, lobbied and raised funds to build a Congregational School that would eventually open its doors in a house in Southwark before later moving to Lewisham in 1815. With the support of benefactors, the school was able to move to our current site in 1884 and became known as Caterham Congregational School.
Our founders and the generations of ‘Foundation members’ that followed in their footsteps have been instrumental in making Caterham School what it is today, serving as a precursor to the modern Trustee Governance structure that exists now. To this day Caterham School is fortunate to still benefit from having a ‘Foundation’ whose membership includes alumni, parents and many of our past trustees. The Foundation is led by the President of the School, a post which has been held by The Honourable Mr Justice Graeme Mew since 2019. Distinguished past holders of this office include Lord Leverhulme, Sir Alan Moncrieff, Sir Olliver Humphries, General Sir Alex Harley and Don Mear, amongst others. Although the governance of Caterham School is exclusively the responsibility of the Board of Trustees, our Trustees are appointed by the Foundation and members provide guidance and advice to the school.
