Professor Nick Evans Shines Light on Dark Energy

Last week Caterham was delighted to host guest speaker Professor Nick Evans from the High Energy Physics Group at the University of Southampton. Nick’s ongoing research looks into the fundamental nature of reality, looking into the structure of the vacuum and the force that is responsible for the majority of the mass in everyday objects by delving into the strange worlds of string theory and the holographic principle. In this talk, Nick chose to shine a light on the topic of Dark Energy, taking us through the astronomical, particle physics and phenomenological reasons for its existence. 68% of all the ‘stuff’ that makes our universe is Dark Energy, yet we have no idea what it is – we’re hoping that that question might at long last be answered in the future by one of the 70+ Caterham students who attended!
