Caterham Artists Take Top Prizes at Sovereign Art Foundation

On Wednesday 18 December, the Sovereign Art Foundation held their award ceremony evening at Phillips Auction House in London’s Mayfair. You will remember that last year Andrew O won the judges vote, and then went on to win the Global competition with his drawing ‘Wisdom in Wrinkles’.

This year there were 169 pupil entries from 26 different schools. The 20 finalists were invited to see and interact with their work exhibited in the prestigious gallery space which was also open to a wider public audience for that week. The public had been voting for their favourite piece for the month prior to the exhibition both online and in person at the gallery.

The standard was extremely high and the competition was very close, however, I am delighted to announce that Zosh H (Lower Sixth) won the judges vote for their huge mixed media painting – “Nightmare of Mismatched Antipathy’, banking £800 for themself and £2000 for the Art Department, and Eugenie C won the public vote for her oil painting – ‘A Bride To Be’, banking £400 for herself and £1000 for the Art Department. They also had the option to enter their work into a silent auction, the proceeds of which are split between the student and the Foundation. This year the money raised in the London Student Prize will be donated to Latimer Community Art Therapy (LCAT) a grass roots community organisation which provides accessible professional mental health support through art psychotherapy as well as community services and activities, to support creativity, physical, social, and emotional development. Zosh agreed on a winning bid of 1400euros and Eugenie has accepted an offer of £1200 for her painting.

Both pupils will now progress to the Global Award where we will once again ask for your vote, once that has been publicised.

Please do join us in congratulating both pupils for their fantastic work and remarkable achievement.
