Etching Workshop for Junior Schools
Caterham’s Visual Arts department hosted Year 5 and 6 pupils from Caterham Prep, Micklefield Prep, Seaton House, Oakhyrst Grange and St John’s C of E Primary school to complete a workshop focussed on helping to build work evidencing alternative skills which could be used in portfolios for art scholarship applications in Year 6.
Our visiting pupils made tonal observational drawings which they then used to create an etching plate. They were shown how to use the printing press and worked in small teams to print their work, which was then copied and worked into with coloured pencils. The rooms was full-to-bursting and there was a continuous hive of purposeful activity with a very relaxed and chilled atmosphere. The pupils (and their accompanying teachers) were over the moon at the work created.
We hope to replicate this workshop later in the school year for different prep and primary schools.
