History Festival 2024
Caterham School held its second-ever History Festival, featuring a stellar lineup of acclaimed historians and authors who captivated attendees with thought-provoking talks and engaging discussions with a packed and engaged audience.
The festival attracted a wide audience, including a strong turnout of students from London and South East schools as well as Caterham pupils, parents and alumni all keen to learn from the expertise of the visiting speakers.
A Lineup of Renowned Historians
The event opened with Geoffrey Hosking, a distinguished authority on Russian history. He explored the complex relationship between Ukraine and Russia, shedding light on Ukraine’s path to nationhood—a topic of significant contemporary relevance.
Linda Porter, celebrated for her recent book on Margaret Tudor, provided a fascinating account of the life of Henry VIII’s elder sister, blending historical insight with lively storytelling.
Clare Jackson, Honorary Professor of Early Modern History at Cambridge University and winner of the prestigious Wolfson History Prize, followed with an exploration of themes from her award-winning book Devil-land: England Under Siege, 1588–1688. Her talk delved into the turbulent period of late Tudor and Stuart England.
The final speaker, Richard Evans, a leading scholar of Nazi Germany and fellow Wolfson History Prize recipient, offered a compelling discussion on the Third Reich. He skillfully intertwined his own biographical journey with an analysis of key figures who shaped Hitler’s regime, as covered in his book Hitler’s People.
Huge thanks to our panel who engaged with the audience during lively Q&A sessions and generously gave their time for extended book signings. Thanks also to Village Books, Dulwich who ran the festival book sales.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year!
