Louise D’Costa
Editor of free monthly newspaper the Tandridge Independent. After an 18-year career at the BBC, working on shows such as Panorama and Newsnight and within the newsroom, mum of three, Louise decided that the stress of juggling childcare, commuting and a high-pressure role had to stop, although she had no idea what she would do instead. Her only skillsets were writing and logistics.
In the spring of 2019, Louise spotted a Facebook post asking if anybody would like to buy the local newspaper which began in 2006, and after thorough market research and several meetings with the then-editor she decided it would be her next move.
As a first-time editor, Louise had to learn a whole host of new skills quickly (which included finance and advertising) and embarked on an extremely steep learning curve. Her skills which were hugely tested three months after her inaugural edition went to print, when the pandemic hit.
After successfully guiding her paper through the difficult covid years, the Tandridge Independent is now a well-known community paper across the district, and continues to grow steadily each month.
