Alex M to Represent GB at International Physics Olympiad, Tokyo
Huge congratulations to Alex M who is representing Great Britain in the Physics Olympiad in Tokyo this summer. This is a magnificent achievement for Alex who has been selected from the top 4,000 physicists across the UK.
Back in November 2022 a new year of the British Physics Olympiad was launched with Round One of the competition. Over 50 Caterhamians voluntarily elected to take part in the gruelling first stage of the country’s biggest and most prestigious physics competition joining over 4,000 students nationwide. From here, only those participants who had achieved the ‘Top Gold’ standard moved on into the even more demanding Round Two.
Cut down to just 180 participants, the Round Two paper requires an undergraduate level of comprehension and advanced mathematics to make even a slight headway into the questions posed, but for Alex M in Upper Sixth this challenge was to be relished and ultimately conquered.
To make it through to Round Three, the five-day long Easter camp at Oxford whereat the GB team for the annual International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is chosen, requires a top 24 place in Round Two. Just before Easter, the physics department at Caterham were delighted to reveal that Alex had made it through to this prestigious event, reporting back on five tiring, jam-packed but ultimately thrilling days stuck into problem solving some nefariously tricky questions.
Only five students from the summer camp would be chosen to go and represent the country in Tokyo this July at the IPhO and Alex has only gone and done it! Caterham could not be any prouder of his achievements – this is a truly momentous and well-deserved occasion. We will be rooting for you Alex in July!
