My Fair Lady Warms the Cockles
As the lights rose on the opening night of My Fair Lady, it was clear that something special was about to happen; theatre was back.
This week we were delighted to welcome back audiences into the Humphreys for our senior school production of My Fair Lady. When we held auditions back in June, we couldn’t be sure that a live performance would be able to go ahead after two years of continued uncertainty, but we charged on none the less with a fantastically resilient and determined cast. I am so grateful to the pupils who worked with enthusiasm and diligence, taking the uncertainty in their stride, and working tirelessly on their harmonies, dance numbers and comic dialogue in the hopes of bringing you a ‘loverly’ production for the end of term; and they have not disappointed!
Taking on such a well-known show as My Fair Lady is no mean feat, but the cast rose to the challenge, putting their own spin on iconic roles and songs we know and love so well. Led by the fantastic Millie T and Josh C (both hopeful Drama school candidates…!), the cast took us on a journey from the cockney streets of London to the pomp and ceremony of Ladies’ Day at Ascot. With well loved songs such as I Could Have Danced All Night and Get Me to the Church on Time, this rags-to-riches story was just what the doctor ordered to warm the cockles on a cold December evening.
A production of this scale could not come together without an incredible amount of work behind the scenes, and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Mrs Richards, Mr Assen, Mr Hall, Mr Baddeley and Mr Kingscott for all their hard work in making this production one to remember! Supported by an incredible live band made up of our wonderful Visiting Music Teachers, alongside a full pupil crew who had to navigate some very complex scene changes, I feel extremely lucky to have worked with such an excellent team. And of course, the biggest thanks of all has to go to the cast who succeeded in delighting their audience and bringing some much-needed theatrical joy back into our lives. In the words of Colonel Pickering, “You did it! You did it! I know that I have said it, but you did it and the credit for it all belongs to you!”
