Strength in Numbers as Caterham Celebrates Record Results
A fraught week for UK pupils ended on a high with Caterham School’s 2020 GCSE results reaching record grades.
Today’s results again placed the school in the top flight of UK schools, with all grades set according to examination boards’ strict criteria for all schools
Despite a challenging and uncertain year:
- 40 per cent of all grades were the top grade 9
- More than two thirds of all results were the top 9 or 8 grade (equivalent to an A*)
- 4 out of every 5 grades issued was a top grade 9, 8 or 7 (equivalent to an A*/A grade)
- The average grade profile of a Caterham pupil is ten grade 8s
The Headmaster, Ceri Jones, said: “Our young people can celebrate these grades with certainty knowing that they have worked hard for them across a two-year course and with a summer that has shown their true character and resilience. I am also delighted for all pupils across the country who have to endure such turbulent times and who deserve such positive news today.
“We moved quickly to ensure our pupils’ pathway into our Sixth Form back in March to provide certainty ahead of a difficult few months for everyone. They are now more than ready for Sixth Form study, having completed our online Inspire course through the summer term, and as young people hungry to make the most of life at school.”
“Even when lockdown hit, our pupils and whole community continued to work through virtual school from day one of lockdown to the end of term, all the while supporting each other and the wider community around them. Whether they were making PPE, helping raise funds for East Surrey NHS charity SASH or supporting our partner schools, our pupils have shown their true colours. I am incredibly proud of them and the whole school community. Despite difficult times for everyone, working with such purposeful and inspiring young people provides a great deal of optimism.”
Today’s results follow hot on the heels of Caterham’s A Level results which saw pupils achieve 70 per cent of A* to A grades and an average grade profile for pupils of AAA. 98 per cent of Caterham pupils secured places across Oxbridge, Russell Group and top 10 UK universities, including medicine & veterinary courses. Ten Caterhamians are now heading for Oxbridge to join the 60 plus Caterhamians already at the world leading universities.
