Annual Cricket Match with MCC
On Wednesday the 27 June the School welcomed MCC for the annual cricket match against the 1st XI. We couldn’t have asked for a more idyllic day to play cricket, and Home field looked stunning in the glorious sunshine.
MCC won the toss and elected to bat, however the school got off to a perfect start with OC Richard Turner being dismissed first ball of the match by Antony McGowan, caught superbly by Captain Matthew Terry at mid-off. This wasn’t a sign of things to come though, with MCC scoring 218-6 built around another OC, Ross Powell’s magnificent 112 including 17 x 4’s and 2 towering 6’s. Max Wilson was the pick of the bowlers and helped put the brakes on the innings with 4-44.
In reply the 1st XI started well, Louis brown and Simon Dickson putting on 55 before Dickson was removed for a fine 31. Brown and Matthew Terry carried on the good work scoring 39 and 35 respectively before a middle order collapse led to the School being dismissed for 167. The architect of the collapse was man of the match Ross Powell who bowled brilliantly and claimed 4-16. It was a valiant effort by the 1st XI against a very strong MCC side, and despite losing it was probably the strongest performance of the season. The match was played in superb spirit and full credit to MCC for a wonderful declaration. We are already looking forward to next year’s match.
