Musical Theatre & Contemporary Music

Musical Theatre & Contemporary Music

We are proud that at Caterham School all genres of music are promoted and performed. Pupils are encouraged to perform their own compositions in whatever style they wish- from folk to acoustic covers. Film music, world music, musical fusions and electronic music are all explored through themed concerts and one-off performances. We aim for pupils to be able to genuinely express themselves through music and support any styles they wish to explore.

Musical Theatre

Our department supports all aspects of musical theatre in the following ways:

– Full-scale musicals (Most recently; In The Heights, My Fair Lady, Grease, Les Miserables, Hairspray)

– Musical Theatre Evening; a concert featuring songs from the stage supported by show orchestra

– Trinity College Musical Theatre Exams

– Use of The Humphreys Theatre, a fully fledged theatre with excellent sound and lighting rigs

– Choirs dedicated to performing music from the musicals (Vocalpoint and Close Harmony)

Contemporary Music

We encourage singers and musicians to explore creativity by performing and composing contemporary music. This includes:

– Live Lounge evenings; for performances of original compositions

– A Swing Band

– Use of various venues within the school such as The Humphreys and Deayton Theatres and amphitheatres

– Choirs dedicated to performing pop, rock and film music (Vocalpoint and Close Harmony)
